I was due to defend my dissertation in late November 1998. Dissertation defense is an academic institution probably dating back to the Middle Ages, as do such pleasantries as the rack and being hung, drawn and quartered. The candidate presents his or her research, which is then followed by questions from any faculty member or student who attends. The public is then asked to leave and, behind closed doors, the committee goes to work on the PhD candidate. It’s the committee’s last chance to get its licks in.
